I Didn't Hear You, Can You Repeat That

Pardon? Say what? Come again? Say that again? Eh? Can you repeat that? Sorry? You what? Aye? I missed that? Hmm?

It doesn't matter how you say it, they all mean the same thing: you didn't hear what was just said.

I've been thinking recently about how often I don't hear what someone has said and how often I ask them to repeat themselves. In some situations I will ask repeatedly, no matter how many time it takes, until I hear. In others, I will only ask once or twice. And, in others, I will not ask at all.

With family and close friends I am happy to ask repeatedly; most, if not all, of them know I am partially deaf and they are usually happy to repeat themselves until the cows come home. Sometimes, and I guess it depends on their mood, they don't want to repeat themselves - this annoys me quite a bit, if what they just said is not worth repeating why was it worth saying in the first place?

The people I really struggle with are the quietly and soft spoken ones. Some people just refuse to speak up and it will not matter how many times I ask them to repeat it, I will never hear them properly! I find myself avoiding speaking to people who I know speak really quietly, just to avoid the hassle - I wish I didn't do this because I'm sure it looks rude to them and I'm no doubt missing out on some good conversation. The obvious answer here is to tell them that I have trouble hearing what they say; I really don't feel comfortable doing that and I can't remember a time when I ever have done. I really should make the effort to start in future.

In the opening paragraph I said that in some cases I will never ask the person to repeat themselves. I used to do this a lot - I used to be too embarrassed about my hearing loss, I tried to hide it as much as possible - I would either try and guess what they said based on the odd word I'd heard or the context of the conversation or simply nod, laugh or give a short answer like "yes" or "no". I realised some years ago that this was a stupid thing to do, I cringe at the amount of times I must have given stupid and meaningless answers. I'm sure a lot of people do this exact thing all the time, it's an easy way out.

It's rarely uncomfortable to ask someone to repeat themselves in a one-to-one conversation; a group conversation can, on the other hand, be very difficult. It is a good idea to position yourself somewhere where you will have the best chance of hearing; this is something you can do when you know that one person in the group is going to be doing most of the talking: the teacher at school/college, someone giving a presentation to a group, and so on. It's not so easy when you don't have a single person to concentrate on: when you are chatting with friends or in an office meeting, it is particularly difficult if there is also background noise such as background chatter or office air-conditioning. It is too easy to loose the conversation when you are having to listen for voices coming from all directions.

If you've recently received a notice from the IRS with the bold heading "You Need To Make Sure Someone Is Your Dependent," the red lights and whistles should be going off because someone has filed a fraudulent tax return that is claiming your children as their dependents. In most cases, that other person will turn out to be your ex-spouse or your child's other parent.

The sting of lost custody in a separation or divorce can leave the spurned party grasping for straws, looking for any recourse in the face of child support, medical expenses and other court imposed childcare costs. The solution they are looking for can manifest itself during tax time when the opportunity to claim dependents is provided on the face of the 1040 Individual Income Tax Return. People get the mistaken impression, particularly when filing a self-prepared return, that filing a claim for dependent and the additional child tax credit is a race to beat the other by filing first. They couldn't be more mistaken. The IRS rules for claiming a dependent provides the custodial parent as the exclusive taxpayer able to make the claim on their children.

Determination of who the custodial parent can most easily be determined by a Court Order which names the custodian and thus the parent eligible to claim the dependents. But there are often cases where there is no Court Order; there is a situation where the parents are simply living apart; or the parents have shared custody. Who gets to claim the dependents then?

The IRS determines that the custodial parent is the parent with whom the child resides for the greater number of nights during the calendar year. (Code Sec. 152(e)(4)(A) , Reg. Sec. 1.152-4(d). ) The rules state "that a child resides for a night with a parent if the child sleeps (1) at the parent's residence (whether or not the parent is present), or (2) in the company of the parent when the child does not sleep at a parent's residence (for example, if the parent and child are on vacation)." The IRS Rules do not provide for both parents to claim dependents for the purpose of dependency exemption and the additional child tax credit.

The only way for a non-custodial parent to claim a child as a dependent is when the custodian signs a written declaration (in the manner and form that IRS prescribes) stating that they won't claim that child as a dependent for the tax year beginning in that calendar year. The prescribed form is IRS Form 8332, Release of Claim to Exemption for Child of Divorced or Separated Parents but the IRS allows substitute documents that conform in substance to Form 8332.

So what do you do when you receive the "You Need To Make Sure Someone Is Your Dependent" letter?

The IRS recommends that once you have verified that the dependent has been correctly claimed by you, no further action is required. But this will never serve as a deterrent to the offending party who may continue to file a fraudulent return resulting in the custodian receiving this notice year-after-year. The custodian should respond to the IRS letter stating in effect:

"I am the custodial parent based on the rules of IRC 152(e)(4)(A). The dependent spent X number of nights in my custody in tax year 20xx. Further, I have signed no documents releasing my custody of the dependent for the purpose of claiming a dependent exemption or the additional child tax credit."

This serves the purpose of getting your custodial claim on record. The custodian should also provide a copy of the response letter to the non-custodial parent as a further deterrent for future fraudulent filings. A pro-active custodian can quickly put to a stop any tax tricks tried by the Ex.

Why We Designed Our Own NAS Servers For Use In Our Data Center

Over the past few years, we at Technetium, Inc. have had the opportunity to deal with Snap because of our model 14000 Snap servers. One day we installed new managed switches and the Snap Web-based management console would no longer operate. It would just hang at gigabit speed. To make a long story short, after exhausting all of my options on the Internet, I sent Snap technical support an email to try and resolve the problem. Here is their response:

To my dismay, they wanted $120 just to talk to me, and my bet is they wanted another $1,000 or so to upgrade the software. On their Website I could not find any way to buy support for this model any more. And by the way, to add replication between 2 of their Snap servers, it would cost something like $1,000 per box.

So, here we are, with 2 boxes, no support, and I'll bet that you can't even buy parts for it any more from Snap, much less anywhere else (maybe eBay?).

Off we go to buy new NAS replacements. Originally these 14000's were $10K apiece, for roughly 1TB of storage. All things being equal, I should be able to buy a NAS box for really cheap (yeah right!). What I found was that a high-quality NAS system that would do RAID 5 would cost between $3,500 and 4,500, not to mention that a 1TB Snap 520 would be over $5K. That is when we decided to build our own NAS servers!

With a great backround in PC/server hardware, it was easy for me to pick top-quality hardware and brand name components. I still have Pentium Pro servers that work! I chose the best hardware, put it in a rack mount server case, and voila! I have a NAS server. Here is the list of components:

We need an OS now, and for that I picked FreeNAS (http://www.freenas.org) which runs on FreeBSD. You can't ask for a more stable operating system. And by the way, the FreeNAS OS runs from memory and boots from a CF card (no chance of the hard drive crashing and destroying the config). Once you have your domain set up, you only pay for internet connection, advertising and ongoing educations, that's it. You can't expect to make money selling free stuff and ask others to do the same. Most internet marketers would love to hear people say "It's too late now, too many competitions, I should just pack my bags and go home, the internet is too complicated, etc...". You know why? the less people they have to compete with the better which in turn will make them more money.

The fact is, it's never ever too late to start anything and that includes internet business. I firmly believe that the internet is not going anywhere and you should too. Every year the stats will show you the number of people shopping

3. Drink lots of water even before you leave your house. Try to consume up to a gallon of Water before you get to the course. This will help you absorb and digest your pre-game meal and hydrate your muscles for optimal performance.

Don’t take this lightly.


Dehydration causes energy loss, lack of focus and concentration and fatigue later in the round. And remember, that’s before you even come to the course. Once you get their you should be drinking water every hole.

4. Don’t wait ‘til you get tight to stretch on the course. You should be constantly moving your body and stretching your joints while you play. I see and hear too many golfers complaining of tight lower backs or shoulders during the round, What amazes me is that with all that complaining they do nothing about it.

Why?

Think of your body as a machine. If the machine starts to break down – fix it. I mean stretch those areas while you’re playing. You’ll see a big difference in your swing mechanics late in the round.

5. Snack while you play. No I don’t mean the full meal at the turn with a beer. I mean bringing fruit and nutrition bars to eat every 4-6 holes. When you supply your body with the proper nutrients your energy levels stay balanced and you will avoid those mental lapses late in the round.

How many times have you had a good score only to blow up late in the round? I’ll bet more than a couple of times. I know I have. Treat your body like a Ferrari not a Ford Pinto.
